Barbara M. (Rowan) Schmidt, age 92, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 11, 2026, at Pocopson Home in West Chester, PA. She was the wife of Alfred E. Schmidt, with whom she shared 31 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Martin Rowan and the late Catherine (Farron) Rowan.

Barbara and her husband, Al, raised four children, Al Jr., Tom, Patty, and Jim.

She lived in Ocean View, New Jersey, for 15 years before moving to Kennett Square/ West Chester, PA, where she lived for the past 25 years.

Throughout her life, Barbara was someone who was content with simple pleasures and spending time with her family and friends. She never met a person she didn’t like and everyone who met her liked her too.

Barbara was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kennett Square, PA.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Thomas Schmidt and James Schmidt; her grandchildren, Kristin Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Christine Brown, and William Garthwaite Jr.; four great-grandchildren; her brother, Martin Rowan Jr. and his wife, Barbara; and her son-in-law, Bill Garthwaite. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her children, Alfred E. Schmidt Jr. and Patricia Garthwaite; and her daughter-in-law, Judy Schmidt.

You are invited to visit with Barbara’s family and friends from 10:30 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 212 Meredith Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Her funeral mass will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held privately.
