Barbara V. Thompson

    Barbara V. Thompson, 78 yrs., of Toughkenamon, PA, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. After a short fight with cancer, she succumbed to complications related to the disease.

     Barbara was known for her warm, caring spirit, her sense of humor, her desire to serve others, and her independence.  She loved her three cats.

     Born in West Chester, PA, she was the daughter of Raymond VanLenten and Joyce Green VanLenten of Paoli.

     Barbara graduated from Lycoming College in 1967 earning her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and English. She also earned a Master of Science degree in Administration with a Concentration in Social Work from West Chester University in 1988. She was a Drug and Alcohol Counselor and Social Worker for Gaudenzia in West Chester until her retirement in 2021.

     She was a part of Providence Church in West Chester.

     She is survived by her son, Dr. Chip and his wife Audrey Roper of New York City; by her four granddaughters, Brianne Roper Cochran of Philadelphia, Abigayle Roper McIntyre of New York City, Devan Roper of Long Beach, CA and Aaliyah Lopez of Downingtown, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her stepson, Recardo Thompson.

     You are invited to visit with Barbara’s family and friends from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Providence Church, 430 Hannum Ave, main sanctuary, 3rd floor, West Chester, PA.  A memorial service celebrating her life will follow at 7:00pm.
