James A. Roosa

James A. Roosa, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 24, 2024 while traveling overseas, age 62.  Jim met his wife Karen in a creative writing class at the University of Richmond in 1982.  They were married in 1984 and moved to New York, where Jim was an Account Executive at J. Walter Thompson Advertising on the Nestle and Reynolds Wrap accounts, followed by a position as Vice President at Wells Rich Greene/BDDP on IBM and Chase Manhattan.

In 1992, Jim and Karen, two-year-old daughter Kate, and infant son Andrew moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where Jim worked at Stoner Bunting Advertising — first as Account Group Director, followed by positions as Vice President & Managing Director of gift cards, and President & Chief Innovative Officer of gift cards.  Jim was instrumental in creating and growing the business-to-business gift card industry, and was an industry leader in business-to-business gift card sales and marketing.  He worked with clients ranging from Neiman Marcus and Brooks Brothers to Chili’s and Texas Roadhouse.

Jim and Karen began traveling full-time after retirement in 2019 — to Istria, Croatia; Galicia, Spain; Curaçao; the Tandayapa Andean Cloud Forest and Ayampe, Ecuador; Phuket, Thailand; Puglia, Italy; Cape Town, South Africa; and Fort Kochi, India.

Jim loved hiking, birdwatching, taking cooking classes and reading poetry aloud with Karen, and attending Kate and Andrew’s school and professional music and sporting events.  In recent years he became an accomplished photographer of birds and wildlife.

He is survived by his wife Karen Roosa of 39 years; daughter Kate Roosa Habegger (Mike), son Andrew Roosa (Adley), and one grandchild; a sister, Alane Roosa, a brother, Andy Roosa, and nieces and nephews.

A family memorial was held in early March. Memorial donations may be made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
