Joann “Whitie” (Sterner) Watkins, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026 at the age of 77.
Joann was affectionately known as Whitie by her family and close friends, for her bleach blonde, almost white hair, growing up.
Born on January 1, 1949 in McSherrystown PA, to parents Clyde and Mary A. Sterner, Whitie attended Delone Catholic High School before studying at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, DE. She then went on to work at Dupont, where she was employed for 40 years.
Whitie was known for her generous heart, contagious laughter and ability to make everyone feel welcome. Her life was defined by her kindness, selflessness and devotion to her family. She was a devoted mother to her daughter Erin, and her son-in-law, Anthony. She always said that she knew she was meant to be a mother, and Erin felt that daily in the love and support she provided. Once her grandchildren were born the same devotion transferred to them too. She treasured spending time with them; playing games, cuddling, sneaking them treats, and bending the rules to grant them any wish or want they could possibly have.
She is survived by her daughter Erin (Anthony); grandchildren, Mallory and Shane; her siblings, Jim (Marilyn), Clyde (Carol), Joe (Christy) and Mary Deatrick (Tom); as well as her nieces and nephews who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the love and compassion Whitie shared throughout her life. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
You are invited to visit with Joann's family and friends on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 AM at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church 300 State Road, West Grove, PA 19390. Her Mass will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held privately.
