Richard (Dick) Wallace Inglis, age 101, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 2, 2026, at Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. He was the spouse of Jean (McVittie) Inglis, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage. Born in Clifton Springs, NY, he was a son of the late Rexford Inglis and the late Alice (Sanders) Inglis.
As a young man, Dick served in the US Army and was deployed during WWII. While in Europe during the war, Dick spent time in England, Belgium, and France and served as a military policeman often serving as a courier.
Dick got his Master of Social Work and worked as the head of Family Service of Philadelphia (1972-1987), as well as similar positions in Wilmington, DE, and Morristown, NJ.
Outside of his profession, Dick had many passions, hobbies, and interests. As a gardener, he built his own greenhouse, propagated plants from cuttings, and grew a large vegetable garden every year. When it came to photography, he enjoyed photographing his family, taking pictures of landscapes, and documenting his travels. He even constructed a dark room in his basement to develop his own pictures. And when it came to woodworking, he had a large shop where he kept his tools and worked on projects of all kinds, including furniture, cabinets, and doors, just to name a few.
Dick will be remembered for kindness and care for other people, especially to his wife, his selflessness and willingness to help others, his strength and determination, and his unfailing dependability.
Dick will be missed for his helpfulness, for the support and encouragement he gave, for the long conversations, for his guidance and advice, and the familial pillar that he was.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Janet Murphy and her partner, Kenny Johnson; his grandsons, Christopher Murphy (Joyce) and Justin Murphy (Lydia); his great-granddaughter, Ruby; and his brother, Philip Inglis. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, David Inglis, son-in-law, Mike Murphy, and his brother, Burton Inglis.
You are invited to attend Dick’s graveside service at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery 1235 Birmingham Road, West Chester, PA 19382.
