Richard Stefen Waritz

April 1, 1929 ~ March 3, 2022 (age 92)


Richard S. Waritz, Ph.D. 

After a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease Richard (Dick) died at the age of 92 while residing at The Summit in Hockessin, DE, where he always had a smile and hello for everyone. He was born in the Pacific Northwest, where he back-packed most of the Cascade Crest Trail and climbed most of the major mountains in the Cascade Mountain range.

During his retirement years Dick & Ruth traveled all over the world and while at home he kept himself busy working with wood, leather, jewelry, stained glass, fixing just about everything including the family cars, and finding ways to keep the squirrels out of the bird feeders.  Dick also loved fishing, golfing, bowling, crossword puzzles & Sudoku, and could be found many a Sunday afternoon working the New York Times crossword puzzle with his red pen.

Dr. Waritz received a BA in Chemistry from Reed College in Portland, OR and his PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicology Sciences. He also has entries in Who’s Who In America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care. His employment career started at The DuPont Company where he retired as the Manager of the BioSciences group at Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine. He then was employed by the Hercules Company where he became Manager of the Toxicology Group. After retiring, he formed an independent toxicology consulting company, BioSante International, Inc., where he had clients worldwide. 

He is survived by four children, Joyce Farmer, Sharon Waritz, Gary Waritz (Maureen), and Carol Buccio (Sam); five grandchildren, Erika Losten (Mike), Jerry Farmer (Pamela), Kathleen Waritz, Kim Willis (Tyler), and Katie Farmer; and four great-grandchildren, Payton, Dom, Paige, and Teddy.  He was predeceased by his wife Ruth E. Waritz who died in 2017 and with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. 

Services and interment are private.  Contributions in his memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association
